Today, Congressman David Valadao joined a bipartisan group of representatives to reintroduce the Farm Workforce Modernization Act. The bill, which has previously passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support, aims to update the H-2A agricultural guest worker program. It seeks to provide stability for farmers and farmworkers.
“Central Valley farmers are the backbone of our nation’s agricultural industry, but they continue to face serious challenges finding and retaining a reliable workforce,” said Congressman Valadao. He added that the current H-2A program does not meet labor needs but believes the new act is a positive step toward addressing workforce requirements and securing the food supply chain.
Rep. Zoe Lofgren emphasized the importance of providing stability to America’s farm workforce amid ongoing economic issues. “The men and women who work America’s farms feed the nation. However, in the past few years, we’ve seen labor shortages contribute to high food prices,” she said.
Rep. Dan Newhouse highlighted that reintroducing this legislation sends a message to farmers about ongoing efforts to ease burdens from the current H-2A program state. “This issue has been, and remains, my top priority,” he stated.
Rep. Mike Simpson noted that solving workforce issues is crucial for American agriculture. “Supporting American agriculture means providing a stable, reliable, and legal workforce,” he said.
Congressman Jim Costa pointed out California’s reliance on farmworkers as an economic backbone: “American agriculture depends on a reliable workforce and nowhere is that more true than in California’s San Joaquin Valley.”
Congressman Adam Gray warned of potential consequences from labor shortages: “Labor shortages on our farms could lead to higher food prices across the country.”
The Farm Workforce Modernization Act proposes reforms including:
– Providing more flexibility for employers within the H-2A program while ensuring worker protections.
– Establishing a pathway for agricultural workers in the U.S. to earn legal status through continued employment.
– Making modifications for user-friendliness and access for industries with year-round labor needs.
