Men's basketball picks up first win over La Sierra
Jake Heberle scored 22 points off the bench and Jack Roggin had a double-double in the Chapman University men's basketball team's 85-76 win over visiting La Sierra. The Panthers moved to 1-1 on the young season with the win.
Roggin scored 16 points while dishing out 10 assists for his first double-double. Heberle led the Panthers with 22 points in 29 minutes off the bench as five different players scored in double figure. Blakeley Stoughton scored 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting in just 13 minutes before fouling out.
Daniel Foldes and Cruz Billings were also in double figures as Foldes scored 10 points with seven rebounds and Billings scored 13 with five assists.
After falling behind early, the Panthers went on to lead for the final 32 minutes of the games with the lead opening up to as many as 17 points in the second half.
The Panthers trailed by as many as five points early in the game. After Stoughton knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game at 16-16, La Sierra hit a couple free throws to briefly regain the lead. Roggin found Heberle open on the three-point line on the next possession and he buried the three-point shot to put Chapman up 19-18 and the Panthers never trailed again.
The Golden Eagles pulled back within one at 29-28 with just under six minutes left. The Panthers responded with a 14-5 run to close out the half and take a 43-33 lead into halftime.
The run continued early on in the second half as Chapman outscored La Sierra 9-2 over the first three minutes to open up a 52-35 lead. A 30-point effort from Uriel Lejtman led La Sierra back into the game and cut the lead back into single digits.
Chapman was able to hold off the Golden Eagles late push and hit a few clutch free throws down the stretch to take the win at home.
Chapman next hosts Westcliff on Saturday at 7 p.m.
