WASHINGTON – Representatives David G. Valadao (R-CA), Jim Costa (D-CA), David Rouzer (R-NC), and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) have announced the reestablishment of the bipartisan Congressional Specialty Crops Caucus dedicated to advocating for policies benefitting the specialty crop industry.

"Specialty crop producers have faced many challenges over the last few years," expressed Congressman Valadao, emphasizing the need for federal support for specialty crop producers. He highlighted issues such as supply chain backlogs, rising input costs, labor shortages, and drought impacting producers but acknowledged their resilience in supplying fresh, nutritious food to the world.

Congressman Costa stressed the importance of bipartisan support for specialty crops, stating, "Any Farm Bill must include strong, bipartisan support for specialty crops." He emphasized the significance of policies that enable specialty crop growers to provide safe and healthy foods to American families.

Specialty crops, including fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, and horticulture, play a vital role in the nation's food security and economy. With specialty crops contributing significantly to the agricultural sector, the caucus aims to introduce legislation supporting producers and addressing issues like market access, research funding, and sustainability measures.

Representative Rouzer highlighted North Carolina's diverse agricultural production and the need for the caucus to amplify the voice of the specialty crop industry in Congress. Similarly, Congresswoman Slotkin emphasized the importance of protecting and supporting small farmers in Michigan, stating, "It’s critical that we protect and support the next generation of farmers – including small farmers."

The Caucus plans to build on previous bipartisan efforts in Congress to address specialty crop trade barriers, promote automation technology, and expand market access for producers. Specialty crop producers in California have welcomed the Caucus's establishment, with industry leaders expressing gratitude for the co-chairs' leadership in advocating for the industry's needs.
